Does it work? and what product do you recommend ?
Do you have to work the ground up and do soil test and fertilizer

Need to make sure you can get good ground contact which means at least clearing the leaves.. Then the smaller the seed the better , clover, brassicas etc etc

I used to use "No Plow" in 2 small clearings in my woods. Mow as low as you can, then drag a disc across it to allow good seed to soil contact. Worked like a champ !

Obviously if the grass is high you should mow then hit with round up or clethodim to kill grass , round up kills everything clethodim only kills grass.. you can also broadcast right away the herbicides won't affect seed.

I think I read you can mow then sow then mow again to drive the seed to the ground.

Yes, it absolutely works. I haven’t used our plow or disc since I read about the Throw and Mow technique a few years ago.

Here’s a good video. The food plot stuff goes from about 1:00 in until about 5:00 minutes. I agree with them completely.
Note: I mow or bush hog the standing vegetation to get it down on the ground, they use a cultipacker. I guess their technique would be called Throw and Roll.

these guys were belly aching at the start because of the results they got, but they committed a cardinal sin......no soil test first. if you want to grow anything, a soil test will get you exactly where you need to be if you follow the findings. for $15/test, cheap and good info.

No need to pay. Contact your local UK Extension office for a soil test. Your taxes already pay for it.

Thanks guys for your help .I think there is ways to plant a descent food plot with out of the exspensive equipment .I am blessed to have this farm that I hunt, I don't want to tare the mans farm up by any means, wanna leave it like I found it, as we all know it's getting harder and harder to get permission to hunt, it's 152 acres of prime hunting area, told me to treat it like it mine. Respect another mans property he will respect you

I was just outside and and saw this and thought of this thread. This worm has nothing to do all day but work our ground up and poop out free fertilizer. All I have to do is not destroy his habitat.
