    Rem. 870 21 in. barrel ....Hevi-Shot .573 Choke....40 yds.....Federal TSS #9

I like the pattern of these shells. You could probably get a few more yds. out of it, but I like em at 40 and under ! So this is what the grandson will be using in his 20. I have tried 20190209_153816 (800x450).jpg several other shells and nothing compares to this....Good stuff !

I should have some patterns to show in a week or two, if we can ever get any dry weather. I'm testing handload
TSS loads, mostly 2 3/4" currently. Cause with this TSS stuff you really don't need 3 or 3 1/2" loads. But that's what testing is for. But from initial testing, this stuff holds good patterns at distance. Which lead and patterns beyond 40 begin to fall apart terribly and steel, well that stuff never patterns well.

Not being negative here but I know this stuff patterns well but what about killing well??Seems like number 9 size shot wouldn't have much knockdown power.

The #9 shot in TSS weighs more than lead #5 shot that,s where it get its knock down power !

9s would be like a swarm of yellow jackets on a turkeys noggin; now that would hurt.

This is what I've never understood about HTL shot. If a #9 weighs as much as a lead #5, and your shell has a load of 1oz, what are the advantages? I could see if the ammo was loaded by volume that you would have more 9's than 5's, but by weight you should have a near equal amount or even fewer? Someone please explain. The advantage seems to be that HTL shot is harder which reduces deformation and causes more consistent patterns .

I don’t think it’s weight, but density. You get far more pellets in 1 ounce of 9s versus an ounce of 5s.

One ounce of lead #5s contains 173 pellets, one ounce of TSS #9s contains 362 pellets. Because the TSS is so much denser, it carries the same energy as the lead, even though its a smaller pellet. I can say from personal experience that #9 TSS will fully penetrate and exit the off side of a turkey's head at 50 yards.

A chart i found says there are 173 number 5 LEAD pellets per oz. There are 362 # 9 TSS pellets per oz. I bought a new gun and ordered a new choke as well and decided I’d like to try the tss. My gun shot about 10inches high at 40 but still managed to put several in the turkey head.
