Union democrat huh. Let me introduce you to grouse guy
I'm not doubting anyone. I'm about half blind an did not stay in a holiday inn last night. I have never seen an elm tore up that way. They are hard to split when dead an will dull a chainsaw chain
The bark appears to be Ash and all of the dead elm trees I have ever seen while morel hunting have the bark peeling off. Something has pecked, clawed or chewed on this tree. I suspect a critter has been after the ash borers in that tree.
Once the ash borers kill the tree they move on.
Never tried one. I know some Cooper's hawks that have!
Pileated woodpecker damage
Definitely a woodpecker
Pilated woodpeckers are protected.
Everywhere except a little democratic village right off 42 in Union.
looking forward to seeing what critter your camera reveals.
Grouse should be.
Because of the weather and other things going on I have not put it out yet. I am going shed hunttin some tomorrow and going to put it up. I imagine it is a woodpecker, but never dreamed they would tear up a tree like that.
