It’s been used as an additive and flavor/smell enhancer in food and drink for many years.

I wish I could down vote. Wtf?

Edit to add: I do secretly enjoy good Irish whiskey as well. Just not as much as bourbon.

The proper way to relish fine bourbon is to fill a 16 oz mason jar with ice....then fill it with fine kentucky bourbon. Enjoy. Pretty simple.....unless you get into the really spendy stuff. Then you omit the ice and just fill up the jar.
