My experience wit der amish, aside from the road side markets is not positive. Trespassing and poaching is a way of life for them. Now that mushroom season is upon us, I'm sure my prejudice will be re-enforced...

Every community of amish is different. All depends on their bishops as to what is allowed and what isn’t. The reason there are so many different communities is because of some not agreeing with how the church/community is being run. So they go out and start their own communities. Being a direct relative of a bishop usually leads to privileges others in the community don’t enjoy.

I was in amish, John Lengacher's, Stihl shop on J40 in Iowa, on the wall was a picture of an amish trespasser wearing a side arm, carrying stolen shed antlers, smoking a cigarette. I asked John if this feller had to go before the big cheese, John said no, he is the Bishops son.

Yeah they will ravage a mushroom patch. It seems like they dont even mind being on camera either. They just go to town like they own the place.

I have heard if they find your fruit trees, they are worse than coons.
My son went to his house to get us some pears and there was not a pear left on the tree, We don't know exactly what happened but we have suspicions.

I am not an "Expert" on Amish, but my wife has a good friend who is Amish. . She has told us stories worse than anything any y'all have relayed.
BUT. Many are good folks and very Honest....in short, they are just like the "English" as they call us.
Mennonites are very similiar to the Amish but they drive Cars and have Electricity.. otherwise, they raise their children kinda separate from society, and don't have any Entertainment besides Making More Kids.
I was talking to some Mennonite boys, and they know nothing about what WE think are common things.
Such as NASCAR. Boys were changing a big wheel and I told them they would be a good "Pit Crew." Puzzled looks till I showed them on my Smartphone. They were Amazed.
Extremely Hard Working people as a whole.

All my neighbors are Amish good hard working people. Good neighbors, here stay on their side of the fence and keep a close eye on my place. Always willing to help and share.

I remember seeing the Amish Mafia show on TV. If even half of what they reenacted was true, they are nothing but predatory thugs. As far game laws go, the Amish believe God put game on earth for man and he has dominion. They can hunt whatever, whenever, wherever they want. English laws do not apply to them.

Yeah I used to work part time helping a buddy out of Pembroke haul them around. New order drove tractors and wore semi modern clothing and Mennonites drove plain trucks. The old order ones wore all home made clothing and stunk to high heaven. You want to talk about funk, drive a long van with 15+ men and barefoot women who looked like they had size 13 mens feet. The dairy farmers were the worst smelling and occasionally the smell of fish would be overwhelming lol. Some had off features like huge noses and ears, weirdly short yet fat fingers, etc, which I attributed to inbreeding cousins.

I’ve noticed that if someone tells you they’re ex Amish usually if you pay attention they have a strong jawline and a big nose and sometimes you can tell in their forehead too. Only men though, I’ve never met any ex Amish women.
