Another senseless treestand death

Since 2 partial knee replacements was leary about getting into stands. After about 4 yrs got stands put of outbuilding to try. Straps and safety harness had dry rotted, could break with hard pulls by hand. These webbs rot and may not even know it until too late
Sounds crazy but at 65 i am looking at treesaddles. Really appear much safer

The way I fill at 54, when I'm 65 lord willing my but will stay on the ground.

Ive been looking for a good harness but can’t find any made for humans that fit my stature. Mule is closest thing.

I always use a harness with a fixed or climbing stand but admit I never do in my ladder stands. I feel it’s not needed with how you get in and out and secured while in it.

I've never used one myself, I grew up in trees. I bought one because it was required to hunt ft Knox. I found it cumbersome, uncomfortable

You looking for a dedicated specifically hunting harness? Or would a 5 point harness in general work? Got a guy I work with that’s 6’4” 450lbs and he’s got a harness. I doubt you’re any bigger. I’m certain we can find you one

How many of you remember the old Baker stands (I think that's what they were called) where you hugged the tree to climb up and climb down? Dang, I'm getting old.

I was up about twenty five feet and I dropped four or five feet ,one morning before daylight ,with one I borrowed from a friend.But after I got my legs and stomach out of my mouth , I hunted with it.

Whatever’s safe and easy. Send the size and brand if you don’t care. As long as it doesn’t kill my boys when I move.

You wouldn't be the first to die from a broken ratchet strap or ladder that comes apart, etc. The manufacturers don't trust their own products enough to tell you not to wear the harness that they include in the box.

That's for insurance purposes. After several treestand manufacturers were put out of business by lawsuits, the corp lawyers and beancounters figured out they're money ahead by including a $25 safety harness with a strong recommendation to wear it in the instructions.

And why were there lawsuits??? Because the stand broke and someone got hurt. Or someone slipped climbing the ladder. Or whatever. It's a flimsy metal contraption held to a tree by a couple of straps. Easy to see why there's risk involved.

They make 5 point harnesses that will fit some big ol boys. Probably won’t find it at cabelas but any store that sells workplace safety gear will likely carry them. Most are rated for 10,000 pounds. They may not be camo either but any dark color would work

Looks like a summit. Dudes lucky to be alive. A gator strap on either side of the stand may have helped hold the halves together. Either way it’s dangerous anytime your feet leave the ground. Glad he’s okay

@Little FR Miller construction harnesses are made for bigger guys. They are way more stout than hunting harnesses.

I wear one all of the time. My reflexes aren't what they used to be so I'm tethered from the moment I take the first step off of the ground.
