A hunters paradise
There’s a lot of banded turkeys showing up on the Kentucky Turkey Hunters Facebook page. Not much info has been reported about how far they’ve traveled from banding sight to harvest, or when they were banded though…

Have talked about this with several biologists across the SE. They think it can yield significant data. Other wise they would not be doing it. I think in Tn the banding was started some years ago. They spread the banding across the state , as KY I doing now.

They are banding jakes if possible in the fall. They want to see how long this bird lives, and what the non hunting mortality is, among other things. Like how far they travel. I killed banded bird in TN last spring. Had been banded ten miles from kill spot. Was two plus years old.

Any data is better than the guessing game that has somewhat been done in last decades. IMO.
That’s neat about how far that it had traveled!!

They used to and may still tag fish.
I caught a tagged bass 45 years ago. I sent all the info in and got back a whole dollar.

Foster, KY, USA.
Only time I've seen a banded bird was back in the early to mid 90s when they first started stocking them around here. They were so tame I could walk right up to them.
