This lines up with exactly what a biologist told me. They can take a small sample and the program spits out a ton of data.Have talked about this with several biologists across the SE. They think it can yield significant data. Other wise they would not be doing it. I think in Tn the banding was started some years ago. They spread the banding across the state , as KY I doing now.
They are banding jakes if possible in the fall. They want to see how long this bird lives, and what the non hunting mortality is, among other things. Like how far they travel. I killed banded bird in TN last spring. Had been banded ten miles from kill spot. Was two plus years old.
Any data is better than the guessing game that has somewhat been done in last decades. IMO.
Pay attention to the weather for the next month and a half. The nest I found should be hatching out today(+ or- 3 days). If it gets cold and rainy it will result in poor survival for poults. Bad weather=#1 killer of turkey poults…. Loss of good habitat #2. Predators #3. Hunters #4. Could possibly switch #2&3 in some areas.
