I just heard of one starting to take appointments for 2024.

I used Google for my numbers
62% yield carcass weight vs live weight
Then 50% yield on carcass weight
Came out to $5.37 a pound not even counting butchering fee.

Is that right?

Probably close. I have a buddy who's selling, and he's not able to match sale price on beef.

Farm raised beef should bring more that store bought beef.
It costs a lot to get one to slaughter weight.

I’d say it’s beyond time to start producing our own beef. If you can raise a steer to weight and safely butcher and process the meat…..screw the goobermint. Sell it and dare them to stop you. It’s time producers commerce directly with the consumer

My girlfriend has been badgering me on buying a side of beef for 2 weeks now bc of this bullshit uncertainty of the economy. Her friend has been paying $1800 for a side fully processed. No effing way. I don't spent that much a year on all my groceries. She buys one every 6 months.

I told her I will stay with venison and buy ribeyes on sale

Home Processing of a Beef Animal is quiet an involved operation.
I know a couple people who have done it and said they would not do it again.
It can be done, but is a lot more than hanging a deer.
Jest sayin.....

My buddy bought a walk in cooler. We put it up. Mainly for Deer. But last 2 years we killed a Beef and 2 for 2 other people. Its A LOT OF WORK. We talking not killing for other people. Only just for us 2 now. To much work and time involved with a Beef.
