Dogs Chasing Deer

This has been a great discussion and an eye opener. Again being new to KY I have never seen this before. The only time was 10 years ago in Ohio and it was a beagle! No chance of killing that deer. I just want to add a couple points. The next day I saw the same buck track walking back on the same road in the opposite direction. It was obviously not killed by the dog. I live in the mountains with few neighbors. I have driven the area and always stay vigilant and have never seen any of these dogs at peoples houses. The two worst offenders are some kind of mastiff I’m talking 100 lb dogs one is black and one is multicolored red and white. Every time they see me they bolt and run away. I wonder if they are wild? I also wonder how chasing these rut warn bucks affect them long time. If they are chased constantly they are expending body weight. Studies have also shown bucks that are stressed grow smaller racks. I wonder if this affects their antler growth the following spring, if they are being constantly harassed.

That’s a good point, and also very true. I balanced and weighed all of these thoughts out years ago. That’s why I said I give my neighbors a chance to be good neighbors, and talk to them. At the end of the day though a lot of people put their pets above people. It sounds like you have 2 stray dogs that no one will miss. The 1st response you got on this thread was/is great advice.

Seems only natural to me. My dogs will and do chase anything and everything which moves, and two are exceedingly fast. They have chased the deer a few times here at the cabin (every time they have been loose and seen them), and the deer have returned, soon after the fact. Mine lack interest in killing the deer and simply enjoy the chase.

Politely talk to your neighbors, showing them photos of the dogs. You can put up some live traps, if necessary. Just ensure that you take them some place they will not be put down and can be adopted.

Not a very good advise to let dogs chase the deer. If illegal and shouldn't be allowed. Why let em??? Control your pets when hunting as this disturbing other hunters (yes I know they can drive deer to others....but that's not hunting). I'd use the 2S methods SSS

Had him on leash mere moments ago, only because he doesn't have enough sense to return inside at 24°F, even stubbornly refusing.

Took him to his favorite pole, but he obviously became immediately distracted and pointed, after freezing. I did not teach him to point like that, but he is a pointer. No idea which critter he spied and did not provide him time to yank me in powerful launch toward it.

Good breed dog will do it from instincts. They naturally love cold weather if not wet... alerts will also help protect you from other critters.
Here in Texas I was hunting duck geese and shot 3 birds. One I thought fell in one spot[I kept try get dog to go after....he pointed towards another direction]. After 3 whistle to correct, he set down looking off to his left...while I was stomping made at him going to his right(which was where I thought bird fell....my mistake). Since then I take his advise...lol
I post in here cause I also hunt family property in Kentucky.... so all nay sayers as why in here if from Texas
Here's why let him walk til next year for my Kentucky cousin to come harvest

It would be tough for sure. If one nips at my kids, I’ll find him a new home. If one actually bit one of my kids. I’ll give him a permanent new home. That’s one thing I won’t tolerate is a mean dog.

I’m fairly new to Kentucky this is my second season hunting here. I am in the South East region. I routinely capture dogs chasing deer on my property mostly on cameras but I have witnessed it. I have witnessed by camera or sight more than 15 different dogs. Yesterday a gigantic black Bull mastiff type dog chased a buck by my stand. I’ve seen this dog chasing deer before. I’ve driven around the area and cannot locate where it lives. Does this happen all over KY or is this unusual? Are these dogs killing the deer or just chasing them. What do you think the impact on the deer’s health is? My opinion is the deer probably become accustomed to the dogs and just return. The health impact must be great. The buck yesterday was one of the biggest in this area. I followed the tracks and the dog chased him for over a mile off my property. He must be rut depleted, now he is exerting all this energy trying to escape this dog. What should I do if anything?

Most here know I used to live in Jamaica and trained protection dogs there (attack, guards, and then some)....merrily trolling the thread here is all, due to such and simply because I'm a pro-troller... 😎
