We planted early fall cabbage and broccoli this evening. I have another cabbage and broccoli variety to be planted in about a week or so.

I pulled a half row of tater onions today.

One hill had produced 16 bulbs from the quarter sized set I planted last fall.

I'll let em cure for a few weeks before planting me a new row and sending some to their new home.

Went ahead and picked one a week or two early to get an idea of what to expect. It was good but needed another week. Cantaloupe watermelon and butternut squash are looking great.

Cantaloupe will slip from the vine when they're ripe. You can force em to slip a couple of days before they fully ripen. Watermelons will let you know by exposing themselves.

I've heard, and believe it to be true by sampling over the years that melons make all of their sugar in the 7 days before ripening.

The vines will wither down and start exposing all of the fruit. It will all happen in about a week. If the vines are still erect and healthy looking, the melons are still maturing.

I'm starting to get excited about the patch of Blue Clarage corn and cornfield beans. The beans just started blooming yesterday when the temperature started dropping, should be a bumper crop!

Barney, I have some banana peppers planted in buckets. They have green beautifully and have bared some. But everytime they fruit I lose almost every leaf on the plant except the top. Then they will re bloom. Any ideas?

Hey Barney, Are you doing those from starts or direct sow? Also are the cornfield beans a greasy bean?
