Pumpkins. So I live in Lex and got a little raised garden. My little girl wants to grow pumpkins. Like big ones we can carve up at Halloween. We grew a lot of vined plants as a kid but I don’t remember pumpkins. What do you suggest? I’ve heard if they take off, they really take off! You can get seeds cheap on Amazon. Haven’t seen any for sale at Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc…that are already starting to grow.

Nows a good time to get them started if that's what you're wanting to know
Not as much as advice on the process. If I put them in my little garden, will they explode and dominate? Should I do the bucket thing? Maybe just start in a bucket and let the vines grow close to my house or privacy fence? What I’m saying is I don’t have much space. I’ve done a few cucumber, squash, zucchini, but mostly tomatoes and peppers in the space I have.

You really need alot of space for the vinse to grow, up to 30 feet.
Do they grow easy from the seed or should I find one or two that has gotten started? I have success planting small plants. I’m by no means a seed germinating green thumb.

They will explode. We planted a small section last year and couldn't keep them in the fencing. Very few pumpkins for the space they took up.

Only way I've grown them is from seed. I always grow them in my corn. Here you can see the leaves around the edge.

Now I'm depressed. Thought my garden was looking good so far but looks like most of your plants are already flowering. None of mine are so far. Tomatoes are close to first flowers but I will probably pinch those first few off to encourage more foliage growth this early. Peppers/Squash/Zucc/Cucs are still a couple weeks away from flowering. My blueberries are getting closer as well, but mine some flowered early and got zapped by a late frost and have very few berries and others flowered just a couple days later and are doing great with loads of berries. Blackberries were hit hard by the bad cold snap near Christmas and are having to grow back most of their stalks. Will get very few berries off those this year after loads of berries for the last couple of years.

same for my black berries just paid a high school kid to go thru and cut all the old dead canes out and put down fresh mulch to keep the weeds at bay. zero of the old canes survived this winter but are coming back out pretty nice. gonna be a late round of black berries. I have some tomatoes blooming but most are just putting on the first flowers. I never pull blooms on tomatoes as i am usually pulling leaves off the bottom right now to help push more upward growth. peppers either look great or horrible got a couple varieties that are having some major issues.

I lost probably 75% of my blackberry floricanes (2nd year fruiting canes) and the ones that did make it mostly have new growth in the lower 1/3 to maybe 1/2, I’ll be lucky to pick a couple gallons this year, picked berries by the 5 gallon bucketfuls last year. I’ve got tons of new 1st year primocanes for next year unless we have another big freeze in December after a drought summer like last year. I’m gonna dig up a bunch of plants growing out from the crowns and start some new rows this week.

this is one reason I like my primocane fruiting variety. always have black berries just gonna be later. plus a normal year I will have black berries from june till frost.
