How much can you take before leaving a job?

Just how long can you deal with a workplace before you finally just give up, swallow your pride and look for other employment? I have a close family member who is dealing with a terrible work place enviroment. They ask my opinion. I know its a hard decision for them because they have given multiple years of hard work and dedication to this place. Overlooked multiiple broken promises of more pay and other things..
I told them its a hard decision to make but if it were me, when I came to the absolute decision that I were being taken advantage of, being underappreciated and having NO support from upper mngt, well then its time to look for someone that will appreciate your hard work..
On a side not, why is it that today when you have an over qualified hard working employee they often end up being abused and overworked to take up the slack from deadbeats?

I would quietly look for other employment and see what options there was.'
When I quit a job I had the worst feeling there was. Wake up Monday morning with no job is scary.
When one door closes another one will open if you work at it.
I agree with you bigbonner. The best time to look for a job is when you have a job. You can be more selective about what you take when you have security.
As far as how much can you take? Never quit because it gets weird for a little while. I’m talking a couple months. Things change. But if there is no relief in sight-set your mind to finding another job and be ready to walk in and give your notice. Life is too short to do something you hate. It’s alright to grind because your family needs the income but you should always look to better your situation. If there is no retirement or pension involved seems like it would be a no brainer. I just wouldn’t quit till I had something else lined up. Management doesn’t need to know you are looking.

Easier to add work to hard workers than deadbeats
I hear this happening to hard workers all the time. And if I was the employer I would do the same but I would definitely compensate my employee for their effort. You can’t just pile extra work on someone because the other nimrods are too inept at doing it. There has to be a reward system to show appreciation.

You can't get there from here.

That's normal unfortunately. If you do your job you are expected to do more since many are afraid to fire deadbeats.

Seen this happen again and again over the years and I can't say that I've ever seen a good employee do anything but improve themselves by quitting and looking elsewhere.

A situation like that can go many ways, just recently I knew someone who got bypassed and gave their notice ... lo and behold the company came back with a promotion and a big raise ... sometimes they just need a little push.

If your family member wants to leave, have them do as others here have suggested and start looking around before they ever give notice, never know what might be just around the corner if you don't look.

And lastly, if your family member is already a good person who takes their job seriously and does it well, they're already the kind of person companies are looking for and by their very nature, they're not just going to curl up and starve. It's almost a certainty they'll find something and it may be the best move they ever made not to mention the misery factor of working in a place that makes you unhappy could completely vanish.

Tell them to go for it and good luck to them.

I had this problem several times in 25 years and within a year i made a move to get out of a bad situation (within my company.) I wont tolerate a bad boss for long.

Every place of employment has their fair share of poor managers so the grass isn’t necessarily greener. In a large corporation its pretty easy to quit your boss without quitting your job, but you have to network and do some work to get where you want to be. If there is truly nowhere to go that is an improvement within the company then he needs to find a another job. There is no harm in testing the waters and seeing whats out there.

Finally a lot of smart folks with the ability to lead complain about management but dont have the balls to take on a management role. My sister has this problem. I have little patience for it. Be a leader, take control, make things better, or STFU.

A good manager will reward this or better yet, develop this person into a great manager. A poor manager will manipulate and squeeze every thing they can out of this person to cover up their failure to get more out of the rest of the team. Do everything possible to not work for this type.
