Spent a few days down in the Atchafalya basin in southern Louisiana. Stayed with Stafford and Belinda at Cajun Experience. https://cajunexperiences.com/
Had a blast. I would highly recommend it. Already planning another longer trip next year (rest of year booked). Got several pics I’ll post along.

Supper that night was gumbo and tater salad. Both were awesome. Went frogging afterwards. Didn’t see many that night and the ones we did weren’t holding good. Mosquitos weren’t bad at all luckily. Good breakfast the next morning and off to run the gar line.

I'm very happy you got to go do that @Nock. Now you see what I been telling you for the past few years is the real deal..
I love that area; folks there are just Hillbillies like us but on the Swamp and Water. Very friendly folks and the Older people speak their Cajun French.
I'm planning on going down in May...and October if the Chineze Election Virus doesn't go wild again.

Coming back to camp from checking the lines. Those lilies are not for camouflage. Wonder what might be under there? Out of 11 jugs we only lost one. So many lilies everywhere be easy to get one under them and not find it. Or sometimes you catch a gator and they take them who knows where. Or they will bite them and sink them.

Ended up catching two alligator gar or gar fish as they call them. That big one was the second jug checked. Wasn’t even moving till we pulled up next to it. It shot out like a cannon. Pulled the gallon jug under and went about 50 yards for it came back up. He thought at first might be a gator. We finally caught up to it. And after couple attempts I pulled it up to the surface and was shocked to see how big it was. We made a loop in a rope and finally got it around its gills and pulled it in the boat. They put the lilies on there to keep them cool and wet and alive. I’m 6’2 and it’s slightly longer than me. Weighed 120#.

How he cleans gar. Takes that top strip off with a hatchet. Then gets the knife out. Pulls the fillets off the sides and flips over and gets the belly meat. Gar meat is tricky. Got to keep it fresh and put no water on it. It will go to mush. They eat it several different ways. He smokes the majority of it and sells it. He gave us a pack and it was great. I brought some meat home as well not sure if I will fry it or smoke it yet. For lunch we had crappie frog legs and onion rings. I also kept the head. Going to try to do a euro on it. He said he’s tried and they don’t turn out well. I will give it a try though.
