Maybe we'll move to KY

It's on my "to-do" list as Oregon goes more "woke". I grew up hunting whitetails in GA. Still hunt there with my brother on a lease. Now that my brother and sister are getting closer to retrement, we have talked about moving into the same area, with them moving north from GA. And it all centers around hunting.

We currently live in Oregon. Hunting and fishing is pretty good. Oregon is 65% public land so there are alot of places to hunt and fish. We live outside of city limits and have plenty of wildlife ( 15 or so turkeys are in the field right now). But Oregon is changing so we are looking for places to move to. From 2200 miles away, Kentucky looks pretty nice.

Move to eastern KY much more hunting availability for public if you can't secure your own place. Feel free to message my about Martin (which I don't recommend moving there) Floyd Pike and Johnson counties.

if I was retiring, I’d go to eastern Ky. If I missed the politics I was running from I’d move to Central Ky. If I had a family and was still working, just based off school systems and career opportunities, western KY.

I mean no offense to Eastern KY but there isn’t a lot of jobs handy.

100% agree with the jobs statement, but cost of living is less and you have unlimited opportunity if you want a side hustle.

My wife and I are both retired. Have been since 2019. My search on zillow/land and farm has been the bluegrass region with counties in zone 1 or 2 for hunting. I appreciate all of the comments.

Live on my farm in south central KY. It’s actually eastern Edmonson County. It’s like a remote area with 35 to 60 minute drives to sizable cities. Lots of recreation in all directions. Deer hunting is very good in this area. Turkey hunting very good also even though numbers are down somewhat. Don’t move to this area if you will miss snow. You’ll need to go to northern or eastern KY. Good luck and welcome.

The 2015-2016 winter snowfall was something like 105 inches total which included lake effect snow near IL border and Lake Michigan shoreline. 60 miles south in Newton County where I lived snowfall was something like 60 inches total. I know you coming from Iowa got plenty of snow and cold. Late season deer hunting was brutal but we killed more big bucks in January than we during the November rut. I don’t care for real cold weather but miss the snow. Friends and neighbors don’t like it when I say it doesn’t get cold here in south central KY.

My last stop before KY was 8,000' up at the base of Pagosa peak in Colorado, it snowed there.

My bread and butter was late season in Iowa, not much snow but it did get cold.

I grew up in Michigan outer reaches of lake effect snow, it used to snow there, like back in 89.

It did get cold here in KY back around Christmas time -3. Someone here made the astute observation that the cold browned out the jap honeysuckle, it's brown here. -3 degrees, I'm thinking also put the hurt on the woolly adelgid.

My neighbors here bundle up for hunting or if and when they come outside in the winter time like it was North Dakota.

Depends on how much $$ you have to spend. Land in central, and western KY is very high($7000 and up an acre if tillable).

Got a small farm across from me that’s for sale. Essentially has two houses and a barn that could easily be made into one. Location would be south central Ky. Lots of deer and Turkey in this area.
