Most Mines are Lost!

I just read 2 articles in Ky Afield (fall 2022 edition) that touched on their plans to reclaim the mine areas for elk, the department is seeking a grant from the Rocky Mountain elk foundation for aerial spraying to destroy the Olive and sericea plants, and the other article states KDFW and Ky division of forestry are making plans to burn 2k acres per year of open lands to promote grassland habitat.

I dont think lespedeza will burn hot enough to harm the autumn olive

I hunted one mine that was completely plowed under!! I dont know what massive machine was used but everything was uprooted and pushed to the edges and turned upside down. 1000's of acres! I heard that some conservancy association paid for it and they were gonna replant native trees.
That's not what elk want!!!!! I bet they close it for elk hunting!

If they planted native warm season grasses and started a burn program, that mine would be the primo regulated area in KY.
Big bluestem, indiangrass, switchgrass. little bluestem, sideoats grama and partridge pea. I believe the existing sericia lespedeza would be a decent forage legume up until fall if burned.

I believe I seen a video once ,of them using two big dozers ,that drug a big monster of a chain between them ,trying to clean some of the bushes up.

It was on ky afield a year or two ago.

I was told, they told the grouse assoc, that it was great grouse habitat. They disagreed but F&W put it in anyhow. I haven't seen anything eat the berries. On my place I put the tractor bucket in the base of the bush and angle down and shove and lift. They don't come back or haven't so far. Guy who owned this place before me was told by F&W to put in Catawba bush/trees. Again another good for nothing plant that is a pain in the ass. It grows angling into any open road you have and you have to cut it out every year. Or it will grow the road shut. State could have great habitat on those mine grounds if they shut down all the UTV riding on em and go in there and eradicate the olive and the lespedeza and put in warm season grasses and switchgrass and some productive mast trees and pine forest.
