This thread is as old as the hills.

According to the law it is legal I reckon.

I made a poor shot on a doe once, it was in bad shape but wouldn’t die. I pistol whipped it to death.

Asked game warden about that scenario and he said if it’s suffering… next time just shoot it and stop carrying a hi point.

Had you not been carrying a hi point the gun wouldn’t have been heavy enough to pistol whip it to death

Not per an ex-CO i talked to about this last year. Said this is pertaining to injured animals hit by automobiles, tangled in fences, attacked by dogs, etc. Not an animal wounded by an archer. She said there's no way to determine in the field if (for a deer) the arrow/bolt or bullet hit the animal first, thus opening a can of worms.

The Ex-CO told you wrong. The statute does not specify hunting, but also does not exclude it. I’d make sure I had my ducks in row before I did so.

Hopefully none of us are faced with any of these hypothetical scenarios. But wouldn’t it be nice if someone from the KDFWR would chime in on a thread this old? I’m certain at least one CO has seen this. That leads me to believe the analysis of being perfectly legal to dispatch a wounded after shooting light with a firearm is perfectly legal due to the KRS Statute's. They just don’t want to publicly acknowledge that.

I’ve had this twice in my lifetime. Once with my uncle who was a butcher. The deer was hit in the spine so it couldn’t run. He took off his belt, put it around the deers neck and cut his throat. I was in awe.

Same scenario 4 years later I’m by myself. Lucky it was a smaller GA doe (basically a large dog) and I did the same thing but I was hesitant. Scared and felt like it was cruel.

My gpa has been caught moonlighting as early as the 50’s and it has been ingrained in us not to shoot after hours so we don’t end up like G-PA.

I would shoot the deer if it ever happened again though. Not really a great moment to relive.
