My preferred weapon for those tasty morsels is a .25 cal PCP air rifle. Little more of a challenge in the spring due to the leaf out of trees but it’s damn fun taking a limit out of one tree. So quiet that the don’t know what hit them.

In 50 years + of hunting Squirrels, I harvested only one female (Sow) , in the fall season, that was pregnant.
You just didn't know they were pregnant if you killed sows of breeding age. Squirrels breed twice a year, Dec-Feb and June-August.

By the end of spring hunting season squirrels are just starting to rut, by the beginning of fall season most are bred.

Reproduction: Eastern gray squirrels males reach breeding age at 9-11 months and females are about to breed around 6-8 months of age. After that, the eastern gray squirrel mates twice a year from December to February and from May to June.

Have you ever hunted the spring season??
No doubt, mulberries are useless for an August squirrel hunter
Hunted spring season? Yeah, since it became legal season 20 years ago or so. Don't see many fruit bearing Mulberry in mature woods. Mostly fence lines in fields?
Honestly can't. recall ever seeing squirrel feeding on Mulberries, even around town with tree covered with fruit.
Robins sure like them.

I can tell you without walking into the woods when the mulberries are ripe. Just look at the purple bird shat all over the car. Depending on where I park I may not even have to leave the house to know.

I had to cut a big mulberry off a service line the other day after that storm rolled through. It was absolutely loaded up with fruit. They weren’t ripe yet but I’m guessing the shear amount of fruit on it is why it split the tree in half in that wind. Not sure if all mulberries are loaded up like that one but if they are should be a good spring season.
