I think they may pin you on the spotlighting, which I believe falls under the "otherwise molest" clause of KRS 150.390. Having a crossbow or not may be irrelevant.

If you had the headlights on the deer and a crossbow in the car at the same time you probably should pay the fine.

It was a herd of deer. I was not hunting....why should I pay. I worked Law Enforcement for 14 years and they have zero evidence that I was hunting. Crossbow was not in reach. It was on the rear floorboard.

I still say you have a great chance of this being dropped. See the county attorney. Or show up to court with all the pictures and explain yourself. The officer may not show and most probably the person calling won’t show. I’d fight this. Like I said earlier. It’s the principle.

Were you on post ? If so, you're done. Pay the fine. If not, go to court and take your chances, but as stated above, if you had your headlights on the deer and not in your normal course of travel you are guilty. Would love to hear how it plays out.

If it was on post. What is their rules and laws? If off post it is illegal to shine light even head lights into a field to light up to see Deer. Hunting or not it is illegal to do. By state law. They call it harassing wildlife. You might beat it dont know.

I have done wildlife photography for years. I have on occasion taken
pics of deer from a roadway. I have never done it with headlights
or spotlights, nor with a weapon in the vehicle.
The way the law reads you are going to have to pay a fine. I wish you
the best of good luck with the judge.....

Guarding my lovely bluebirds
...a dozen deer about an hour after sunlight disappeared. I began snapping pictures of the deer, which is something I always do and have done all my life...

Any decent photos from that night?

I attempted to show him the hundreds of photos and he didn't want to hear it.

Not his job.

... the military has indoctrinated me to live up to a set of values and Integrity is one of them...

Good.

It was pretty dark to be honest. ... I'm too lazy...

Military did not teach you to be lazy.

It was a herd of deer. I was not hunting....why should I pay...

You were hunting. You were doing so with your camera, and via artificial light source. Even utilizing a photography reflector is an artificial light source, just as is a tin pie pan. Prove your integrity via paying the fine for your chosen action and stop being lazy, teaching yourself how to photograph utilizing natural light. You will be proud of the results, because such looks much better, especially for wildlife photography.
